John
The post about Mary got me thinking about John. There seemed to be a lot of people who disliked Mary for being so overly common through the ages and then others who made comments about Jane being in the same boat. I've seen a few times where people point to the whole "Jane Doe" thing which got me wondering if they'd feel the same way about John (since of course there's also the "John Doe" thing). I have never liked this name but I've got really nice associations now and would consider it for honoring purposes (albeit more likely in the middle spot). So, what are your opinions on the name John? Does it suffer in the same as Mary and Jane? Too ho-hum and boring? And for those who like one but not the other(s), why?

Adore JohnI plan on naming a son of mine John. It was my father's name, and I find it classic, strong, friendly, and humble. If it's really that boring to you, you have about a zillion international nicknames to use; for instance, I'd use Vanya, short for Ivan (Russian form of John). I don't hate Mary, but I don't love it. I'm Jewish, so maybe I just can't really get the appeal...? It's a nice name, but nothing special. I know a Mary-Lloyd, though...

I don't think Mary, Jane, or John are boring. I love John, in fact, if we ever had another son it would be in consideration. I do, however, think they're very simple, which I find refreshing in a way. Names that I think are boring are usually names that I'm currently tired of hearing, rather than names that have just been used a ton forever... which somehow isn't the same thing!

I don't actively dislike Mary, I just find it boring. I like John a bit better but I also find it boring. It's not *the* default male name to me; Junior would be that one, lol, but it's close enough for me to be bored with it and to think "John? They had nine months and that's still the best they could do?"

I think John is as overly common and as boring as Mary and Jane- they're all actually a little too traditional for my taste. But, I do love John when it's paired with other names to make a double fn like in: John Alexander
John Paul- This is my Aunt's brother’s name
John Michael- This is my [same] Aunt's boyfriend’s name
John Mitchell
John Luke
John Edward
John Pierre
John Louise

I find John just as boring as Mary. Probably even more boring as it still ranks pretty high on the list. It is also a slang term for a toilet. I really dislike it even though I know a few great guys named John. It's also extremely overdone as a middle name but if it means something to you you should use it anyway.
