I think Dorothy is still an unfashionable old-lady name. I went to school with a Dorothy (just Dorothy, no nicknames) and she hated her name with a passion. She's in her late 20s now and I still can't imagine anyone under the age of 55 named Dorothy.
I prefer Dorothea. It seems to have that old-lady cool quality to it, and even though I'm not one for nicknames, I think Thea is infinitely better than Dora, Dory, or Dot / Dottie.
