I have several Fannys in my family tree, too, and they have a nice literary namesake in Fanny Price from Mansfield Park. Unfortunately, it's much like Gay, in that the modern meaning of the word is the first thing most people think of when they hear it.

Well, my name is Francesca and my nickname used to be Fanny, which where I am doesn't have the implications it has in English. I guess Fannie is less awkward than Fanny, but I don't live in the US.
I've sometimes heard it used as a nn for Stephanie.

Fanny is why my dad stopped my mum calling me Frances!
I'd have loved to be a Francesca, but not at the risk of Fanny!
Fanya is getting into Fanny territory too.

1. I can't say I'm really a fan of it (no pun intended :), but that is mostly because I have heard "fanny" refer to a rear-end more than I have heard it used as a name. If this reference isn't common where you live, then I would say go for it! And I like the idea of using it as a nickname, so that if the child is made fun of she can choose to go with her more formal name.

Presumably you're in the US, so you should know. Where British English is spoken, it is totally and completely unusable. Might you consider the thoroughly respectable Annie instead?

I honestly don't think its useable today, but full names could be Stephanie, Stefania or Francesca.

1. I've heard Fannie is popular among Latinos, and I saw an ad in the paper that mentioned and showed the picture of a young Latina named Fanny, so there's one person with the name. I have trouble really liking the name, though, just because of its use as a slang term.

I actually like Fannie, but I think it's quite an unfortunate name in an English-speaking country. So no, I probably wouldn't use it.

Hmmm, Stephanie? Estefania, Francisca, Francesca, Afanasiya, Tiffany, Theophania?
That's all I can come up with... sorry.

1. Fannie is NMS. I think it's usable at home, but it would be difficult for a girl to be called Fannie at school and in other situations where she'd be around peers. I'd go with Frannie instead.
