Celebrity baby and city names
American Idol alum Carmen Rasmusen has welcomed her first child, a son named Boston. Boston is also the first child for Carmen’s husband, Brad Herbert.
I have no idea who she is, but this made me think about naming babies after cities. I guess the concept is just totally alien to me since we don't use place names for children (only a few rivers are the exception and then only female names). Personally I only like those that have been named after people in the first place (Paris, Athena, Adelaide, Sydney, etc.). How do you guys feel about them? It seems that celebrities are using them more and more (Bronx, Brooklyn, Kingston, London …). I wonder how long it’ll take before we see a little Chicago or Amsterdam running yround;-)

I don't like any city name except Athena (and that because it's Athens in english and I don't get the perfect association). The rest are so fixed as cities in my mind that I would find them weird for a baby. I guess I could live with Sydney too, but I wouldn't use it.
I heard of someone who named their child San Diego. Of course they later realised the blunder and now just call him Diego, but the harm is done.
Anyway this just seems such a trend right now, that even if I liked names like that I would feel inclined not to use them.Lea

Boston...eh. It's not horrible but not my style. I remember my mom thinking it was a cool name.As far as other place names go...I think some work and some don't. I think it depends on whether or not you immediately associate the name with the place or not. For example, when I hear Boston, I immediately think of the city, whereas when I hear the name Sydney, I think of it as a name, not a place.I like the names...Brooklyn
Sydney
Georgia
Indiana
Jackson
Dallas- kind of growing on meSo basically I think place names are fine as long as they're associated as people names as well. Like, maybe not Chicago and Amsterdam ;)
