Aimee?
The list of first names is fascinating - thanks! And the odder ones are surprising - many of them seem very American. I guess there are a lot of people living in Scotland who are getting their names from baby-name sites on the Net these days :)
Anyone know why Aimee is so popular, as opposed to ordinary Amy? Is there a celeb child with the name?

I don't know of any particular reason. I think it's just parents trying to be different and more modern. Amy has been popular for a long time and perhaps has a slightly more dated feel for some?
thanks, I haven't seen the news today so missed it being announced.
Actually after skimming through the whole list, I think it's fairly good. There's definitely much fewer random letters than last year. There are still quite a few howlers though and plenty of y's.
There's still nobdy with my name lol, with all the unique spellings I can't understand why not. Obviously not unique enough.
Some that jumped out at me were
male:
Amen - is that not slightly blasphemous?
Aneurin - yay! Prefer Aneirin though, more user friendly
Blaen and Blaer - they were twins, I posted the ba and commented how horrible this was at the time lol
Blessing - poor boy
Buzby - spelled Busby this is a fairly unremarkable village outside Glasgow?
C (x4) - what, where?
Colin-Junior, David-Junior, Lennon-Junior, Oliver-Jnr. What's going on? It just looks silly.
Costin - me a fortune!
Dido - so much teasing potential never mind the gender confusion.
Dimosthenes - wow there's a name to live up to. Shame they couldn't spell it though.
Domanic - am I the only one who wants to put an extra a in there?
Dryden - v. cultured :)
Evicson - currently being brought up in a cardboard box
Fergus (56) Hamish (60) - yay!
Godsome - like fulsome, but godly?
Hawkai - *headdesk*
Kage - wild child
Law - high hopes
Le'on - arrgh the apostrophe's have arrived, take cover!
Man - hopefully he'll have no problems growing into it
Odhran (4) - on my pnl
Odin - cool
girls:
Alma x 3 - I thought it still had too dated an image here, is this the first signs of it coming back?
Amundsen - on a boy ok, on a girl?
Arden - they obviously don't live near Glasgow, it's a not very nice suburb.
Arwyn - help the y brigade have got hold of Tolkein

Dido is a male name in Bulgaria. I would suspect that child has parents from the Balkans. See:
http://www.facebook.com/people/Dido-Kolev/1001197382
(among others)
And Dimosthenes seems to be a common way to spell this name in modern Greece, so I don't think it's "misspelled"

Efeoghenetobore is probably from a Nigerian language, as both Efeoghene and Tobore come up separately as names of Nigerians when you Google.

thanks I know I was being a bit facetious for many, but I didn't know about Dido and Dimosthenes. I kind of guessed about Efeoghenetobore because there's quite a few long African names in there but usually if you googled them it came up. I never thought to divide it. It still seems like a bit of a mouthful to decide to put the two names together :)
You're welcome!
Thank you!
Question about Lewis and Louis
Thanks so much for posting this! It's particularly wonderful that Scotland actually gives the entire list of names used last year, so we can add up spellings that are probably pronounced the same.
I have a question about that. Would Lewis and Louis generally be pronounced the same in Scotland? Most Americans would pronounce both of them as "LOO-iss". But being closer to France, would the Scots pronounce Louis more like "LOO-ee"?

Hi, I have a Louis and am in the UK and here it's pn'ed Lou-ee. I'm in Scotland a lot as my OH is Scottish and it's mostly pn'ed Lou-ee up there too. There are exceptions to the rule of course!
How exciting!

Weird how the names that are unfashionable in the US such as Amber are rising yet names that are fashionable in the US such as Ruby and Daisy are falling.
It surprised me to see Freya on the list and I'm kind of sad it's so commmon.
Yes all those nickname names are worrying. I mean come on LEXI? as a full name? Ridiculous.

I find it worrying the amount of 'cute' baby girl names on the list. Are those names, like Maisie or Millie or Daisy, going to be so 'cute' when the wee girl is grown up?

Scotland, I'm disappointed...
I thought the names in the Top 100 were actually okay, then I took a look at ALL the forenames given this year and there are some pretty rubbish choices (in my opinion, so don't be offended if you are in fact a fan of these names)...
For example (and these are just the GIRLS names and doesn't include most of the terrible 'unique' spellings):
Alexx/Alixx/Amii/Andreea/Brodii/Caryss/Charlii/Danii/Ebonii/Lucee/Romii/Roxxi/Steevie/Tiia/Triianna (was one X/I/E/S not enough? I'm not a fan of pointless double letters)
Amyjo
Angel
Aryan
Atlanta-Jade
Blessing
Blossom (to me this is a cow's name)
Bobbie-Jo
Bowie
Bracken
Breez
Candy
Cello (like the instrument I guess?)
Chase
Chaze-Taylor
Coral-Cher
Crystal
Dari'Jo
Destiny
Dexie
Diamond
Dillynne (feminine form of Dylan, surely?)
Disney (oh... my gosh)
Dixie
Dusty
Ebony-Starr
Echo
Fayth-Skye
Fizza
Goodness (gracious me?)
Honey
Indigo
Jameson
Jenson
Jet
Jewel
Jorgi
Kadeylea
Kaedden
Kane
KC
Kodi
Lawny
Lennox
Maidie
Maisie (62 girls with this name! Ugh...)
Maxi
Memphis
Miley
Minnie
Miracle
Montana
Nahla
Nevaeh (NO! The poor girls!)
Nevis (as in Ben?)
Nuttah
Ocean-Melodie
Pagan
Paisley (not the nicest area to be named after...)
Patti
Peace
Peaches
Pip

Be kind, there were some good choices.
I actually like Memphis, it is a female character in mythology after all.
Echo is a GP of mine. I like it but I wouldn't use it.
