Fergus and India
I was watching a British show the other day. There was a family with three year old twins Fergus and India. I've always liked both names. But somehow after hearing them together I loved them both. It's such a quirky sounding pair. What do you think of Fergus? India? Not necessarily as siblings, but what do you think of the names themselves?Just for fun, try to image what these parents used for mns. My guess is Fergus Alasdair and India Verity. Yours?

Fergus is one I love, but had no mn to pair it with. Fergus Alistair- of course. So handsome, and you can just hear the highland brogue.I know the Brits (and others) have been using India as a name for a long time, but it just seems overtly, and condescendingly, colonialist for a name- akin to (but not the same as) Dakota or Cheyenne. Is that fair?

I love Fergus! It's my 2 year old brother's name. I also really like India. For combos I like Fergus Jasper, Fergus Hector, Fergus Miles and Fergus Louis and India Scarlett, India Violet and India Madeleine. Fergus and India make a really nice sibset.

Your parents have great taste. :-) May I ask what your little brother's mn is? Just curious. Fergus Jasper and India Madeleine are my favorites from your list. Thanks!

His name is Fergus Cairn.

Hmmm. Fergus Malachi & India Persephone? Your guess is as good as mine! It's a fun sibset. I wouldn't personally use either name, but I would like seeing them on someone else's children.

Fergus Malachi and India Persephone are stunning. Great combos. :-)

I LOVE the name IndiaIt has always been one of my favourites but I've never received much of a positive reaction from it. I would probably use India Rose (as boring as it may seem to others) just because I like it, it goes together and my name is Rosemary. I've always struggled to think of another name that goes well with it. Nothing ever seems right to me. If they were British I wouldn't be surprised if they used India May / Mai /Mae. Possibly India Violet, India Ruby or India Zoe.I don't mind Fergus but I don't hate it either. I think Fergus Alasdair goes well. I could imagine an arty couple having children called India and Fergus. How about Fergus Ross, Fergus Laurence, Fergus Rowan, Fergus Henry or Fergus Jasper?

I like Fergus Rowan immensely. Thanks!

I actually quite like Fergus. I know a little boy named the very similar Fergal and it really suits him :)Can't stand India though, it's becoming kind of trendy here in England now, (I know two girls named India-May and one India-Rose)Fergus Oliver... and India May or Rose :P

Fergal -- I've never heard of it before. I love it. Thanks! It reminds me of Fingal, one of Oscar Wilde's mns. Very storybook / mystical sounding to me.I'm sorry to hear India is becoming trendy. That makes sense because the show I was watching was British. At least your trends aren't awful concoctions like we have here in the US, like Destinee.

Glad you like Fergal!I agree that India is much better than Destinee ;)

Ooh India Verity is a gorgeous combo *steals for my GP list*Cute sibset :)I would imagine Fergus Odin and India Esmee

Oh, wow. India Esmee is being stolen right back. Gorgeous combination. All those vowels are so ethereal. Fergus Odin is quirky but it works. :-)

I used to not like Fergus at all, but I think it is pretty charming. I think Fergus Alasdair sounds great. I have a cousin named India and I like the name. I don't care for her middle name though. I'm not sure what I would pair with it.

Yay. Another convert. :-)

India is very pretty and unique, Fergus though I think is just asking for ridicule.

I like Fergus, but I've never been a huge fan of India. Though I have to admit, Indigo is a guilty pleasure of mine - I prefer it for a girl, and I think its very cute. India Verity sounds super neat. The first middle names that jumped into my head are Fergus Conall and India Joy. For Indigo (though you didn't ask!) I'm liking something like Indigo Alice or Indigo Mae or even Indigo Laine. Yes, for some reason I find Indigo Laine very appealling.

Fergus Connall is a real winner. India Joy sounds pretty, although I'm picky about putting two nouns in the same name. Indigo Mae is nice. I prefer Inigo, and for a boy. ["My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. . . ." Bonus points if you know the reference. :-)]

I love these names both together and seperate.

Aw, thanks! I agree.

Fergus is fine for someone else's bebe, but I can't help but think of Ferguson Darling, Clarissa's younger brother on the old TV show Clarissa Explains It All. Major part of my childhood, et cetera. So it doesn't appeal much.India, on the other hand, feels quaintly old-fashioned, as far as place names go. I love it.Today, I'll say they're Fergus Conall and India Blythe. (You've no idea how hard it is for me to resist the urge to put forth India Pepelu, augh.)Array (who PMed you, btw ♥)
vote up1
Thanks. Fergus Conall is gorgeous. :-) India Blythe does sound romantic and old-fashioned, in a good way. PMed me? What does that mean? (sorry to be a fuddy-duddy)

I sent you a private message--the little picture of an envelope up by your username. I wanted to reply regarding Pepelu, but I didn't catch it quickly enough on the boards. :)Array

Oh. My. God. I didn't know that existed. People have been leaving me messages for many, many moons. More guilt. *sigh*Thanks for cluing me in on Pepelu being Turkish. And glad to see someone else thinks Sylvestra is at least interesting and not poo-pooing it out of hand. :-)

I've no idea if it's actually Turkish or just invented whole cloth--but that's the best I can give you as far as origin information goes. Maybe I'll poke around on Facts someday. And hey, now you've got lots to read? It's okay! ♥Array

I've always loved India since I first saw "GWTW" as a child. My favorite India combo is India Jane. I might have considered using India at one time until my dh said to me "Why not just name the next one Afghanistan?" and I began to see his side of things.Fergus has never appealed to me. I picture a bewhiskered older gentlemen with a thick Scottish accent and an equally thick fisherman's sweater. ;-) Fergus Alasdair is quite fetching. I love Alasdair.
vote up1
Yes, I remember watching GWTW as a kid and loving the name India too. Strange, because I'm put off of the name Scarlett because of the association. India Jane is nice. :-)And what's wrong with bewhiskered older gentlemen with thick Scottish accents? You sound as if that's a bad thing. ;-) Glad you liked Fergus Alasdair. I used to be anti-Alasdair for love of Alistair. But I've been cheating on Alistair lately and Alasdair just seemed softer and a better fit with crusty ol' Fergus.
vote up1
LOL, that's it exactly! Fergus IS crusty and that's the main reason why I dislike it.I've always had a thing for names. I also remember seeing "Sound of Music" as a child and had a fit over all of the childrens' names (especially Brigitta and Louisa).BTW, Indira is stunning (I saw you mention that below).

I think Fergus is excruciatingly ugly-sounding. I don't see the appeal in it at all.India is a huge GP of mine and I love the sound. But as an acutal name? Yick. Aside from the obvious place name issue, which makes it vaguely trashy, it reeks of colonization and other ugly things.
vote up1
OK. Well. Thanks for playing. :-)I've also had conflicting thoughts about India as a name. But it's so pretty and the little girl was so cute. I actually prefer Indira as a name. Do you like Indira any better?
vote up1
Indira! +noteI love Indira. I was thrilled when I found it as an alternative to India. Indira is so beautiful and so underused.P.S. I replied to your Sarah thread waaaaaay down there.

Yes. Indira is a hidden treasure of a name, isn't it?By the way, I think you're confusing me with MariaNikolaievnaRomanova and her Sarah thread. ;-) But it was sweet of you to mention it anyway.

Duh!I am so sorry--I have no idea what I was thinking!
vote up1
Not a fan of India, although it is probably one of the better place names. Fergus is okay but I prefer it as a middle name.
vote up1
Thanks. :-)

Fungus!India is ok, but Fergus just won't work for me lol. Both the combos are fantastic, though.
vote up1
Thanks for the input. :-)Do you have any thoughts on mns, at least for India?
vote up1
I can't get India Jane out of my head. It may be a bit less than thrilling, but I think it's adorable.
vote up1
I think India Jane is thrilling. I like all sorts of mns. They alter the flavor of the fn the way different ingredients in a stew do. Jane is sweet and doesn't compete with India. The effect is to allow India is sparkle even more than before. Like a solitary setting in a ring. (I'm full of imagery today. Or something . . . )
