Still surprising to me is that Samantha is still in the top ten. I hear of the Emilys, Emmas, Abigails etc., but I never hear of any Samanthas.

I noticed the twin names section and have to admit I'm very disappointed with the number of sets with rhyming or very similar names. I keep telling myself that trend died out years ago :(

Leland.I was in denial that he would take such a jump. :(Leo and Lucian didn't go up too much, yay!Still no Leopold, Burton, or Benedict. :DKatarina and Virginia went down quite a bit. Iris, Eleanor, and Daphne went down by about ten each, which is a little reassuring!Alice went up a little, but I was expecting it would stay about the same. Same with Julia.Yay for no Matilda / Mathilde! :D

Yay!Wow, so much namey goodness. Where do I start?I've been keeping track of the most popular names locally for 2006 so for the most part there's no surprises on the national front.I do think it's interesting to look at the Top 5 for each state and compare.

Whee!I came out of my cave for this! It's like name nerd Christmas! *Throws confetti*I haven't had time to process the entire list, but Nevaeh's astonishing rise continues to amaze and disgust. The twins list, like last years, makes me want to cry for those children's doomed individualities.

I was surprised to see Addison jump from 106 to 27 on the girls' list. That's a huge difference from last year. I personally like the name only for a girl, but I didn't think it would become that popular so quickly.

Well, I'm happy to see that all of the rumors about Aiden proved to be untrue. I still like the name, despite its popularity. I do wonder where it would land if spelling variations for all the names were combined...

I'm still in the middle of adding together boys' spellings, but already I can tell you that when that is done there were 27,441 boys named Aiden, Aidan, Aden, Aedan, Aidyn, Aydan, Ayden, or Aydin in 2006. And there were only 25,561 boys named Jacob or Jakob. So Aiden probably really was the #1 name of 2006, -- and that's not adding in any of the boys named Adan, on the grounds that some of them are Hispanic boys given the Spanish name pronounced "ah-DAHN", but it's a good bet some of the Adans are just respellings of Aidan, too. :)

AnthonyAnthony is news to me. Looking at its popularity graph from this site, I had no idea it maintained that level of usage. It never struck me as a particularly popular first name.

Anthony is a name which is probably much more common in working class and non-White communities in the USA than it is in the middle class White communities I think most posters on name boards live in. :)

I know a baby born this year named Anthony to a doctor & laywer parent combo. It's still very popular in families of Italian descent on the whole, not just working class.

Ah, okay.I'd considered that; offhand I could only think of two Anthonys I knew my age, one of which was born in France so he wouldn't have made a blip on the American naming scene anyway. I've always lived in lower-middle to middle class predominantly white rural areas, so it would make sense, then, if I hadn't seen it too much, if it's most popular in another demographic. My closest experience with Anthony having any kind of noticeable popularity (and Raymond, for that matter) is that it tended to be used in my family more for the kids from the 50's or 60's. So I tended to pigeonhole it into the '40-60 year old men of Italian American descent' sort of category. Seems like everyone I know with Italian background has an Uncle Ray or an Uncle Tony. :-)

Some surprises...I thought Grace would move into the Top 10 this year, but it moved down.
Mia took a decent sized jump.
I am astonished that Charlotte didn't move up all that much! Only 10 places. I thought it would definitely make the Top 100.
Valerie jumped 40 places!
Not surprised that Nevaeh scooted up 30 places. How depressing.
I think I find it more depressing that Aiden is more popular than Aidan.
I am surprised Thomas has dropped...I thought it was more popular than it is.I would like to know what the new entries to the list are. Is there any way of finding out?

Ditto on Aiden v. Aidan. I wonder why that is?

I would like to know what the new entries to the list are. Is there any way of finding out?The 2005 list is still right there on the site, so all you have to do is compare to discover this yourself. :)

I would like to know what the new entries to the list are. It's a rather roundabout way of finding out, but I suspect Laura Wattenberg will have a post on her blog next week about the list in detail, and there's a pretty good chance she'll talk about what's new. :)This week, though: http://thebabynamewizard.ivillage.com/parenting/archives/2007/05/the_official_top_names_of_2006.htmlAnd I agree with the first commenter on the jump that Addison made. That's insanity, right there. :DArray

I appreciate the boy's list more so than the girl's list, but I am overall not impressed by the top 10.
