A Girl Name Karis
I met a girl yesterday who's father is a minister and he and his wife wanted a biblical name for their daughter so they chose to use the Greek word for 'grace' (the New Testament having been written mostly in Greek). So instead of using the original Greek spelling that would end up looking something like Xaqis, her parents chose to spell it how it's pronounced: Karis (Kahr'-ece).
Karis said yesterday that although she's thrilled that her parents didn't use the Xaqis spelling (or even Charis) and chose the simplest spelling possible she still found that people would would misspell it or mispronounce it calling her Clarissa, Carissa or even Karen!
So WDYTO Karis? Do you like the Xaqis spelling better?
I really like her name although I almost like the Welsh name Carys better.

It's fine though I prefer Charis.
Do you mean Xapis (see the Greek script for Charis)? Charis, Kharis, and Karis are the mosts common transliterations that exist. I doubt the spelling of Xapis would be used very often by Greeks in English and other languages. It isn't a fair transliteration from the Greek text even though the letters nearly look the same. I personally prefer Kharis. I like the name, but it is not one of my favorite Greek names.
I'm not sure how Xaqis equals the same sounds as Karis. :-/ Seems closer to Zaccheus to me, lol. I like the Carys spelling and CARE-iss pronunciation, personally.
Edited: I must've misread your post and got something out of it like 'they wanted to use the Xaqis spelling because that's how it sounds'. LOL. Just ignore me, here, apparently not working with a full deck. :b

My dad wanted to name my sister this for the same reason
Same spelling as well. Xaqis is just asking for trouble. I also prefer Carys, as it's more familiar.
However, I am thinking of using Karis to honor my dad.

I love Karis, but no other spelling.
