The idea of using this word as a name goes all the way back to the mid-19th century, when
Mary Jane Holmes published a best-selling novel called
Tempest and Sunshine. The book was about two sisters, whose real names were
Julia and
Fanny, but who were always called
Tempest and
Sunshine by their father in reference to their contrasting dispositions. A lot of people think of these as "hippy" names, but there are examples of both back in the 19th century because of that book.
