[Opinions] 1950s teens looking for penpals
I once had a stack of teen magazines from the late 50s and there was a section for people looking for penpals; obviously I had to read all the names!
First & last names:
Lorelei O’Neill !! (she sounds iconic)
Patsy Lamb (sounds like an endearment, very cute and a little dumb too ❤️)
Evangeline Rose (sooo beautiful!)
Foreign:
Edgar (Venezuela)
Co (Holland)
Zyqmunt (Poland)
Jaydev (South Africa)
Cor De Jonge (Australia. I don’t remember if that’s his last name or..)
And I think all of these were from Japan but I don’t remember for sure:
Yukiko
Katsutashi
Takamichi
Michio
Hajime
Others:
Antoinette, Bascom, Boyd, Bruce, Emory, Ignatius (“I like aviation”; so cool), Lunora (I could totally see this coming back with the nn Luna), Lynnea, Neville (“I would love truck loads of letters”; and I hope you got them Neville 🥺), Peanuts Slick ??, Princess, Theretha (“hobby is visiting Indiana graveyards”…Theretha honey, R U Ok??).

I like
Lorelei
Patsy Lamb. Oh god, this ironically on a moody teen would be amazing.
Edgar
Ignatius
Theretha and her love of graveyards is such a mood, but all I can hear is a lispy Theresa and that's just not it...

I was pronouncing Theretha as There-itha until you said that, now I, likewise, can't unhear it as Theresa with a lisp.
Theretha is honestly such a mood and honestly probably me in a previous life. I, too, like to go exploring in graveyards, In the daylight, for name searching. Plus, they're typically a good place for a walk to get exercise.
I forgot how much I love Lynnea. I can't decide if I prefer it over Linnea.
I hope Neville had a beautiful and Grand love story ❤️ 💕 "I would love truck loads of letters” my heart breaks. Bless his soul. May he be a happy and blessed little old grandpa with the love of his life at his side in the present day. Maybe his wife was even his pen pal!
Lorelei O’Neill is beautiful and my first thought is she is a Nancy Drew- type, or at least fancied herself one.
Evangeline Rose is beautiful 😍 but it still doesn't compare to my favorite Evangeline violet
Yukiko is sweet; I like to imagine she was excited to make friends from other cultures.
Takamichi I imagine had a Crooked Smile and a slightly mischievous streak.
Hajime I imagine was a quiet, gentle soul. Very introverted, and wanted to get a pen pal so they could have an easier time making new friends.
Edgar I Envision being a fan of model airplanes, and was the head of his science classes, but disliked the Arts and English.
My grandma's brothers are Boyd and Bruce and they too were teenagers during that time. I'm imaging it was them.
Lunora is beautiful and unique. It kind of makes me think of the Lunesta butterfly lmao! A Moon butterfly, only less pharmaceutical and morally ambiguous.

I love the idea of Neville meeting his wife via penpals 😍
Boyd and Bruce are so cute, if a little frumpy, for brothers! They sound like teddy bears.

Oh my god I am so jealous of your magazines. I have a small collection of homemaker magazines from the 50s and 60s and they are some of my prized possessions. It is so hard to find old magazines in good condition for less than an arm and a leg!
Lorelei O'Neill does sound like a character; I love the surname O'Neill, it's so spunky.
Theretha would have been my best friend, I ALSO visit graveyards as a hobby, thank you very much. What a great gal.

Vintage magazines are very fun! I once got a whole stack of The American Home mags from 1939-mid 1940s, for free at an estate sale, they were going to throw them in the recycling bin!
I’m fully convinced Theretha was out there collecting baby names!

Right? What name nerd doesn't love graveyard exploring?? That's where you find the hidden gems!
well in Mexico it different in the 1950's for teens. parents would not let that happen. But we could write letters to a family in the USA(if we have any there).we could also write to are friends in Mexico.
