THE DUCHESS Her
Grace Agnes Lucrezia Grenville, the Duchess of Somerset
WillowBelle
The
Duke of Somerset is doubtlessly the member of the gentry most beloved by the press. He has only been married to
Agnes for six months - short enough that they are still seated together at dinner parties such as the one hosted by Lord
August - there seems already to be trouble in paradise. His negligent behaviour is what initially sparked the friendship between his
Agnes and
Xanthe.
They two women met at a garden party (as suggested by
Laura B.) weeks away from
Agnes' wedding. Though he was to wed
Agnes shortly, and ought rightly to be besotted with his captivating bride-to-be, he was engaged in a deep discussion with a famous artist, and did not notice that
Agnes was getting accosted by a rather persistent officer, and had to be rescued by
Lady Xanthe, who pretended to be
Agnes' formidable Aunt
Agatha, whom she had known from her schoolgirl days and knew to be a force to be reckoned with.
It is a mystery how anyone could resist the most coveted girl in
London, but
Agnes seems not to interest the
Duke at all. Beneath his veneer of respectability and genialty is a man of complex moods and unorthodox tastes. He seems to the outside world to be an exuberant, romantic, swashbuckling man, and that is how
Agnes saw him too - before they were wed.
Now, she finds she cannot penetrate the recesses of her husband's mind. While he lavished her with affection early on in their courtship, he now shows far more interest in maintaining his estate (especially his gardens - him and
Lady Xanthe have engaged in much playful competition with regard to their respective rose gardens) and hunting with his beloved hounds. It is certain he keeps secrets from his wife - but what are they?
His
Grace _______ _______
Grenville,
Duke of Somerset
