The Pembroke Hotel and Charity is a booming business, allowing Edward, Lavinia, and their young son, a tenacious and headstrong boy who is showing an aptitude for mathematics, to live a life of comfort and luxury.
On his second birthday, Lavinia surprises Alfred with what she thinks is splendid news: she is two months pregnant with her next child. Much to her chagrin, Alfred is not at all thrilled to learn that he will no longer be the apple of daddy and mummy's eye. His stroppiness did not subside when his younger sister was born shortly before his third birthday, once again stealing his thunder.
Now, three years later, he gets along with her begrudgingly, though he still excludes her from most of his games and schemes. While Alfred, dark-haired and hearty, has grown to look exactly like Edward did 28 years ago, his sister resembles her mother: she inherited Lavinia's slight posture, elegant features, and golden hair.
