Both result from the medieval diminutive suffix -kin.Jan (a form of John) -> Jankin -> Jackin -> JackHann (a form of John) -> Hankin -> Hank(Hann/Hankin/Hank could occasionally be used as diminutives of Henry, but they were typically from John)
