To my eys and ears, Madeline is tired and Margaret is timeless. Also, Madeline, Madeleine, Mad-Lynn ... too much choice and too much confusion.
Madeline is the spelling I prefer; it's a family name, though not one I'd like to perpetuate. Even the distant aunt whose name it was always went by her mn, May.
I like Margaret a lot, and don't mind Maggie and Peggy as nns. Meg does not appeal, and where I live the standard nn for Margaret is Margie, with the g as in gasp, not gin. That, I dislike.
