I like it a lot; just about the only fashionable Irish name that I do like. And I prefer the Brendan spelling, though my son's best friend since they were three years old spells his name Brendon.
Bren is inoffensive. It could also be a nn for Brenda, no doubt, but there aren't that many Brenda people in the world any more, so that's not an issue.

I met a Brendon for the first time last weekend. A few days later I realized he didn't spell his name as Brendan.
Brendon feels like someone couldn't choose between naming their kid Brendan or Brandon so they went with Brendon. My own parents couldn't decide if they were going to name me Brendan or Brandon if I had been a boy, maybe I would have been Brendon.
Also I forgot that Bren was a nn for Brenda. Even if it is thought of as slightly feminine I am fine with that.
