I like Ellie on its own as well. I think it can stand as-is.
Ellie has enough of an old-fashioned feel that it seems a bit stronger than Allie, which definitely sounds like a shortened name. I don't like Allie better, although it is pretty cute. I don't think they'd get mixed up all that often.
