I love Sidonie/Sidony/Sidney! :)I don't see them as frilly or weird names at all. I pronounce them differently if I'm speaking French. If I'm speaking English, then I say sid-nee.Well, I'm familiar with them because I live in a bilingual community, so, no, I don't see them as "butchered" spellings/pronunciations. I don't have very much faith in the average English-speaking, non-namenerd person though. :P So, I think you would run into people who would think you decided to be kr8tyvve. I LOVE Sidney on a boy, and in fact, I prefer it on a boy. It seems very masculine to me. It is definitely usable! All I think of is Sidney Crosby, the NHL player, so it's all boy to me (when spelled Sidney).
