[Opinions] Sidony, Sidonie and Sidney
Sidony and Sidonie have been on my long name list for ages now and, for one reason or another, they always got sidelined. Today, however, I can't get them out of my mind.So I was wondering what you thought of these names.
Nice? Too frilly? Too obscure? Just plain weird?
Also, do you pronounce the names differently depending on the spelling (I do)?Earlier this evening, I read the comments in the comment section of both names. Some people there thougt that the name looks like a butchered pronunciation/spelling of Sidney. Do you agree? Or are Sidony and Sidonie distinct enough? And while we are at it, what do think of Sidney on a boy?
Do you think Sidney is still usable as a boys' name in this day and age, or has it become too much of a girls' name?
Thanks in advance!

I like Sidonie. Sidony looks weird to me. I've seen them mentioned before, but never used. I feel like they're probably familiar enough where people wouldn't have a big issue, but they'd get confused with Sydney all the time, I bet. I like to think it wouldn't be confused with Sydney, but in all honesty, it probably would. Or it would if you live in an area where names are commonly trendy. If you live somewhere where more obscure or 'posh' are more popular, then I think Sidonie could be pronounced and spelled correctly on a more consistent basis. I really think that there'll always be a few people who get it wrong. Heck, I'm a Lucy and I've gotten called "Lizzie" before.
Sidony looks like SID-uh-nee, but I don't think that's how it should be pronounced, haha.
Sidonie I say as sih-DOH-nee but I can see going for see-doh-NEE, too (it's listed as French, so that's how I'd say it from a French angle)I think Sidney is really handsome for a boy. Maybe it's just because I'm Canadian and a hockey fan, but Sidney is totally usable for a boy, in my opinion.

I love Sidony. I know a young girl called Sidony, pronound sid-doh-nee. She's Sid for short.
Sidonie I don't like quite as much. The spelling is too frilly and it's a lot girlier.
Sidney I feel is more of a girls name but could still work on a boy. However, I think it would have to be shortened to Sid to make it more masculine.

I love Sidonie and Sidony. They're gorgeous – not overly girlie but still feminine and classy.I can see how someone might think they're an altered prn/spelling of Sidney, but it doesn't bother me, really. I love Sidney on a boy too – it's handsome and charming. Sid is a great nickname for a boy. I hate seeing Sidney and Sydney on girls... it's just tragic. This is one “unisex” name that is strictly masculine in my opinion, same as Morgan.

I like all of them, and I'd pronounce them all differently. I've never come across Sidony irl, but I know a 13-yr-old Sidonie, and I don't think it's that obscure in the UK - lots of people have read Colette, which is where I first came across it.Sidney is adorable and totally usable, and I've only ever seen that spelling on boys here. (There were 183 boys called Sidney born here in 2009)

Sidonie is fine.I've seen it plenty of places and I'm quite familiar with it. Sidony might make some people think of Sydney/Sidney but Sidonie is fine by itself. As for Sidney: It really depends upon where you're at. In DC I think Sidney could work on a male, in Fargo not so much.

I love Sidonie/Sidony/Sidney! :)I don't see them as frilly or weird names at all. I pronounce them differently if I'm speaking French. If I'm speaking English, then I say sid-nee.Well, I'm familiar with them because I live in a bilingual community, so, no, I don't see them as "butchered" spellings/pronunciations. I don't have very much faith in the average English-speaking, non-namenerd person though. :P So, I think you would run into people who would think you decided to be kr8tyvve. I LOVE Sidney on a boy, and in fact, I prefer it on a boy. It seems very masculine to me. It is definitely usable! All I think of is Sidney Crosby, the NHL player, so it's all boy to me (when spelled Sidney).

I love Sidonie and I've never actually thought about the connection to Sidney before, silly me. I personally do not like Sidney that much, but for some reason Sidonie just stands out to me.

Not my style and I really think that most people sill assume that the names are just creative spllings of Sydney.
