[Facts] German male first names

I have been noticing while doing family ancestry that some of the first names of German males have different endings in their lineage such as Jacoby relating to Jacobus and Joanney relating to Joannes, Josephy relating to Joseph etc. What is the reasoning for this? Does the father have a specific ending while the descendant has another? Thank you for any help.
