Oh, I think the root is proto-Slavic (we're talking pre-Europe Slavic tribes), it's just that in modern Croatian the words have developed from other languages. You do find it in words like 'umoriti' (get tired), 'noćna mora' (nightmare) and dialectal 'moriti' (to kill), but they're not connected to the name
Morana in people's minds. Also, with Eastern Slavs (Russians, Belarus and Ukrainians) she was the goddess of fertility and women, so quite positive.
I think
Morana is more connected to Morena and
Marina, which got popular about the same time. Oh, and
Morana is also a river name here.
