[Opinions] Mariposa and Morana
How do you guys feel about Mariposa and Morana? I like both, but am wondering how it's viewed by outsiders.
Mariposa -means 'butterfly' in Spanish.
Morana -even though it says here that it means death, it's quite common in Croatia and doesn't sound like our words for death and die ('smrt' and 'umrijeti' respectively). It's just a mythology name here.

I know of a Mariposa lily: quite a nice flower but not a human name any more than Heliotrope!
And Morana doesn't feature in any mythology I'm familiar with, so I wouldn't give that a thought. It reminds me of the rather odd LDS name "Moroni" which I think was originally some kind of angel or ancient hero but gets used as a given name by enthusiasts. It is uncomfortably close to moron, moronic etc and I can't think that a child with a name like that will thank his parents, unless they live in an overwhelmingly LDS community.

I love both!! I'd use Morana. I like Mariposa too, though.
Oh, I have loved Morana for ages, it's stunning imo - it's different if it doesn't outright mean death (thanks for clearning that up btw)- so, I don't see a problem with it. With mythology, I think it's different, but if, for example, Smrt was a name, then yeah, I would avoid it, but Morana is beautiful.
Morana wouldn't really work here
It is rather too close to moron.
Mariposa: Too cutesy. Cute nickname but that's it.

Morana reminds me of moron, which means a stupid person. Maybe the word doesn't have a Slavic root. It sounds closer to mort, the French word. Is there another (lessr known) language that could have influenced it?
Morana
Oh, I think the root is proto-Slavic (we're talking pre-Europe Slavic tribes), it's just that in modern Croatian the words have developed from other languages. You do find it in words like 'umoriti' (get tired), 'noćna mora' (nightmare) and dialectal 'moriti' (to kill), but they're not connected to the name Morana in people's minds. Also, with Eastern Slavs (Russians, Belarus and Ukrainians) she was the goddess of fertility and women, so quite positive.
I think Morana is more connected to Morena and Marina, which got popular about the same time. Oh, and Morana is also a river name here.

It does sound like Morena and Marina, now that you mention it, but moron pops into my mind first.
Mariposa is the name of Barbie in a movie! :D
I'm pretty sure it's the fairy one. My sister watches that all the time, so that's what I first think of. But I also think it's pretty.
Morana makes me think of a moron.
