Since the idea of being pregnant and giving birth is the very worst form of torture for Dot, Anna very willingly becomes pregnant using the sperm of a mutual friend of theirs. They are both overjoyed when Nathaniel is born, but it is difficult for the new mothers: Anna falls into a deep depression, convinced she is not doing enough for her child, and Dot is completely frazzled trying to take care of a fragile newborn and her (seemingly) even more fragile partner. After a few months of sleepless nights and crying jags, Anna finally sees a psychiatrist and goes on medication and begins therapy. She is much happier, and since Nathaniel is now on more of a schedule and is becoming more active and engaging, Dot has an easier time relating with her son. Both women couldn't be happier as a new family.
