Véronique, the oft-ignored middle child, is a quiet, introspective, creative child and becomes very close with her aunt Thérèse, who acts as a creative mentor and mother figure. After graduating from the Sorbonne with a writing degree, she begins to do freelance work and soon becomes a novelist, writing racy works of surrealist fiction commenting on what seems like every hotbed issue: race, sexuality, relationships, government. Véro, as she is called, is a member of the "in crowd" of Parisian society, socializing with up-and-coming writers, musicians, and artists as well as the usual socialites and minor celebrities. At 29, she becomes a single mother by choice--the father is a young artist who she had a brief relationship with--shocking her somewhat conservative family. She scandalizes them even more when she moves in with her female lover soon after her daughter's birth, and has lived with her ever since.
