I find Brooke very preppy and androgynous, which really isn't my style. But I find Brooke much preferable to Brooklyn.
You raise an interesting possibility when you ask about Brooke being a nickname for Brooklyn. Since Brooklyn just recently became popular, I'm really not sure how often Brooke is used for Brooklyn, but I imagine it would happen at least sometimes.
