[Games] Re: ATTN photo congrats hosts and players
LOL the interest part was a bit presumptuous. I just get very bored scrolling through all of these photo contests. To be fair, they take up far more room than those ittybitty eliminations - the eliminations look longer but really they pretty consistently mirror the size of CAF's, the larger ones mirroring more popular CAFs.
I was proposing to let these ones die out and then not start any new ones.
It is mostly the contest part that is annoying and not really name game related. I must disagree with you when you say it is no different from the person with the best name getting a wish. It is different, because of this reason: ...name games. When you take the name variable out entirely, which we do with these picture contests, it no longer belongs on this board. It is also different because coming up with contest-winning names requires a degree of creativity that is not necessary at all for browsing veer.com, except maybe you have to use keywords you hadn't thought to use before. I guess it is the priority of the contest-maker to decide which values he or she is going to reward in the contest, but you have to admit - the ability to successfully browse stock photographs is a really random value, and a value not related closely enough to naming that it should justify taking up so much board space.
I think what qualifies something as a name game - which is an important distinction to make! - is if there is a heavy focus on names for RP games, and in contests if the qualifying factor is names. So I disagree that it is worthy of the title "game," at least the type of games that should be on this board.
regarding ethicalness: well, yeah, they should know better. But do you really want to be one of the reasons they should know better? [That is one of the problems with constitutional society! People feel as though protective laws take the place of protective sense!] It is like eating a lot of samples without ever intending to buy. Actually, it is more like bringing all your friends with you, eating samples every day, and bringing them to a bake sale. It's allowed, but it is not really what is intended. This is why I do not have as much of a problem with, well, what I did a few months ago with darkest's congrats, which was I used a few photos per round to show the images of my family that I had in my head, and I was the only one doing it, and there were no contests. It is icky and I felt guilty about it, but I figured as long as a lot of other people weren't doing it and since I wasn't objectifying them in any way it was okay. Well, a lot of people are doing it now, and the contests definitely objectify them. It is not legally wrong, but don't you feel a twinge of moral guilt? Anyway, I have never participated in those adoption games (omg they creep me out so much!) but I have looked at them once in a while, and they usually do not have pictures, I don't think? Stock photos are okay to use if they are used sparingly, like eating samples every so often. So this is why I am calling out the photo contests.
Sharing BA's is different, because a. this is a name board, b. parents actively choose to have birth announcements posted - sure, they don't really intend for us to judge them - this isn't a very good argument c. names are MUCH less personal than faces. No matter how liberal a namer you are, names are constructed of letters (maybe numbers and punctuation, too) and not flesh and blood. I am not judging any baby, I am judging letters. Also: d. We are not saying "Okay, go out and search the birth announcements, find one, pretend that baby is 'your imaginary baby,' post its name, and let us vote on it."omg that would be so creepy.
