[Opinions] American and European History
So, I am still on the hunt for names that I absolutely love. I tend to love names with a lot of history to them, especially history I can relate to like European and American history. Current names that I can imagine using for this very reason are Eleanor, Amelia, William, and Henry. Now I have a few questions.
When you think of American history, what names pop into your mind?
When you think of European history, what names pop into your mind?
When you think of American history, what names pop into your mind?

Amercian History: Err... I'm American, I should know. George, Martha, Abigail, Quincy, Lee, Booker, Benjamin, Theodore, Dolly, etc, etc...
European History: Henry, Elizabeth, Maximillien, Louis, Fransis, Oliver, Isabella, Antonia, Ferdinand, Wilhelm, Alexander, Victoria, Beatrice, Albert, Josephine, etc.

Actually, I think it flows very nicely. But I usually try to have too many names beginning with the same first letter. So the Amelia and Antonia clash a bit, imo.
Thats exactly what I was thinking
When you think of American history, what names pop into your mind?
Abraham, Amelia, Dolly, Eleanor, Florence, Franklin, George, Grant, Harriet, Henry, John, Laura, Lincoln, Luther, Patrick, Paul, Rosa, Samuel, Thomas, Ulysses
When you think of European history, what names pop into your mind?
Anne, Charles, Diana, Elizabeth, Henry, Luther, Mary, Napoleon, Oliver, Victoria, Wallace, William
I'm really brain dead at the moment. I might elaborate on my feeble attempt later.

I love the Little House books, and I love the name, I wouldn't hesitate to use it if it just weren't so dang popular. I swear half the girls at my school are named Laura (ok maybe not really, but a good many of them are!)
Ooh! Interesting!
Some are completely unusable because of the person that they share a name with, but they still come to mind when I think of American and European history. I starred the ones I like/would use. I'm a big history junkie, so there are a lot of them. Sorry if there are some duplicates... I was on a roll lol.
American:
Benedict (Arnold)
Christopher (Colombus, I guess this could go under European, too)
Richard (Nixon)
George (Washington (Carver), Bush and a million other presidents)
Abraham (Lincoln)
John (Adams, Qunicy Adams)
Quincy (Adams)
Samuel* (Adams)
Paul* (Revere)
Martin (Luther King Jr.)
Luther (Martin Luther King Jr.)
Marilyn (Munroe)
Amelia (Earhart)
Kurt (Cobain)
Benjamin* (Franklin)
Pocahontas*
Sacagawea*
Sitting Bull*
Powhatan*
Pontiac* (I starred the Native American names because they're interesting, not because I'd use them)
Leif* (Erikson)
Amerigo (Vespucci)
Dwight* (Eisenhower)
Thomas (Jefferson)
Ulysses (Grant)
Helen (Keller)

Really?
Wow, I didn't know that! Mind, I was just typing any historical figure that I thought of, so I figured I was just not being careful. But now that I'm thinking about it, you're right. I can't think of another George.

Yeah, only three George's, one until 24 years ago-James is most common
What about George Washington Carver? He is pretty famous. I know there are a lot of others, I just can't think at the moment.
That's already there
Next to George I put (Washington (Carver), Bush). He wasn't a president though, lol. But horray for his invention of peanut butter!

George Kenan?
Although I don't know exactly how famous he is over thre. I just need to know about him for my exam :-)

American history: George, Thomas, Benjamin, Franklin, Charles (Lindbergh), Paul, John, Robert, Kennedy, Martin, Malcolm, Richard (uurgh, probably no one would want to honour this one, but it did pop into my mind...)
European history: that's quite vast, so I'll divide it into categories:
ancient history: Julius, Alexander, Augustus, Plato, Aristoteles, Darius.
England: Edward, Richard, George, Elizabeth, Mary, Winston.
France: Louis, Maximilien, Charles, Mahaut, Aliénor
Italy: Cesare, Giuseppe, Lorenzo, Giulio, Matilde, Federico

I love history and the classic names.
American-Elizabeth, Martha, Mary, Abigail, Dolly, Eleanor,...basically the first ladies (some of them are classics). Also some Puritan and country ones like Susanna.
William, George, James, Thomas, John, John Quincy, Theodore "Teddy", Franklin, Abraham, Woodrow
British-Elizabeth (for the queens), Victoria, Mary, Jane, Margaret
Men-First is Henry (for the kings-Henry VIII), William (kings and Shakespeare), John, James, Charles, Edward, Winston (for the prime minister)

I think Susanna would be a good name. My grandpa, who I love dearly, expressed that he always wanted to name a daughter Susanna but was unable to because my grandma vetoed it. She thought it was ugly. I think it would be a great name to use in his honour. I am not in LOVE with it though, so it might have a chance in the middle name slot.
Theodore is also a good name that I have been thinking about. The problem is, while I like the nn Teddy I really hate the nn Ted and am not exactly fond of Theo. Besides that, if I used Theodore and Eleanor in a sibset, I think it would look to rhymey.

Oh yeah, I did not relize that. Plus they are all Roosevelts. In that set you could have a Franklin...you would be all covered.
Lol...I didnt' even think that far!
For American history I think:
Abraham
Lincoln
George
William
Thomas
Benjamin
Louis
Tecumseh
John
Henry
Pontiac, probably not a very viable first name choice :-P
Elizabeth
Emily
Eleanor
Susan
Lucretia
Jacques
Etienne
The latter two are because of early exploration in the area that I live in, northern Michigan (Father Marquette and early explorer Brule, respectively). I think of a lot of figures, particulary ones that are pertinent to this region, mostly by surname--Jolliet, Radisson, Cadillac, Dablon, etc. because I either don't know their first names or they're ridiculously long and I can't remember them (such is the case of Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, for example, whose name seems different every time I read it from a different source).
From European history the following come to mind first:
Charles
William
Wilhelm
Rudolph
Sigismund
Peter
Franz
Max
Karl
Friedrich
Joseph
Louis
Eugen
Osman (though the one I'm thinking of isn't European himself, you can hardly avoid his empire in European history)
Bayezid
Suleiman
Mehmet
Mustafa, this and the previous names all following the same logic as Osman
Abraham
Lincoln

William

Actually, I was already feeling these:
Susan
Thomas
Alexander
Isabella (Thinking of Isabel)
Josephine (Baker, anyone?)
Samuel
Robert
Jane
Louis (Not Louis, but Louisa)
Matilda
These were ones you made me think about:
Benjamin
Catherine (I have a feeling it will grow on me. I used to love it but disliked it after awhile for its popularity. It now looks newer to me, almost fresh.)
