Love it! It's my laptop's name (don't ask), and it competes with Elsa for my favourite form of Elisabeth. Elsa slightly beats it because I see Bess solely as a nickname while Elsa sounds to me like a name in it's own right, but I still love it.

Old-fashioned and sweet.

Ahh...I like it, but that's probably because one of my nicknames is Bessie (long story, that). :o)As a nickname for Elisabeth, I think it's fine. However, the name does have a vaguely "cow-ish" sound to me. It is cute, though, and I think as long it's just a nickname for Elisabeth, it works well.

"Bess" reminds me of three things:
-The dairy cow, of course
-A buxom old lady
-Laura Ingalls Wilder, who was nicknamed Bess by her husband (her middle name was Elizabeth)Generally, I think it's just an outdated name. I don't like it very much personally and think Lizzie or Beth are cuter alternatives. However, since Bess is just a nickname, there's nothing terrible about trying to use it on a child, since it would be fairly easy for a Bess to switch to her full name or a different nickname.

Love it, and wanted to use it on myself. However, everyone vetoed it. I think on a child now, it would be fine, and beautiful. Now.....it just reminds everyone of a darn cow!Siri

The only thing I can think of when I hear Bess (or Bessie) is a cow. I'm sorry but I really don't like it.

I never could see how the nickname could come from Elizabeth, but I'm ambivalent towards it, since it is a nickname (I dislike it as a formal name), and it would be up to the child whether she would want to use it or not. And, I only like the spelling Elizabeth.

I like Bess, it's sweet, although I prefer Bessie.

Bess is sweet. I can't decide between this and Beth, I guess I like them both.

I prefer the spelling Elizabeth, and I think the nn Bess is okay. It sounds like a cow's name to me (I think there are a few storybooks with cows named Bess), but then I think of Queen Elizabeth I, one of whose nns was Queen Bess, and I like it more. I prefer it to both Beth and Liz, because it's more unusual.~ Caitlín

I prefer the spelling Elizabeth because I believe Elisabeth should be pronounced e-LISS-a-beth. That's what I think of when I see Elisabeth. Bess is nms but okay.
