Help[Facts] Even more Finnish Names and something for Barb! :)
Hi all!
First of all, I looked up the name Avara and it is not Finnish, but Sanskrit meaning "the youngest"(and it is definitely a girl's name). Pretty cool, it should be added here along with these other Finnish names I remembered...
Aarne (M)- Finnish form of Arnold
Heikki (M)- Finnish form of Henry ( if this is already here then exclude it).
Elviira (F)- Finnish form of Elvira
Inka (F)- i know thia name has an entry here but it is also a short of form of the Finnish name Inkeri so it is essentially a Finnish form of Inga.
Miia (F)- Finnish form of Mia
Aliisa (F)- Finnish form of Alice or Alicia
Eliina (F)- Finnish form of Helen along with te name Helena
Hopefulyy I'll be able to add even more...:)

It's merely a characteristic of the language, many other names have two e's or a's and as you've probably noticed are variations on English names just like many of the other languages of the world. Double i's are very common though, especially for female names. :) I'll try to put together a list of other names here that have different meanings (ie not variations of other names) :)

Tahti (F)- "Star", this name is becoming quite popular in Finland and I know several women with this name.
Kerrttu (F)- Finnish form of Gertrude
Teppana (F)- Finnish form of Stephanie, a female form of Teppo or Tepani
Aasta or Asta (f)- Are both short forms of the name Astrid and are used a lot in Finland
Viljami (M)- Finnish form of William, Ville is the short form (it's essentially the nickname Will)
Aabraham or Aabrami (M)- Both Finnish forms of Abraham.
Hermanni (M)- Finnish form of Herman.

The name Raija is a Finnish girls name ( I know of a family friend with this name) but I'm not exactly sure what it means ( I'll find out). I'll look into the name Raili, but I've never heard of it before. Not sure if Karola is Finnish either, sounds more Eastern European than Scandinavian to me, Karoliina is definitely Finnish but I'll check.
