My name is Tamia and I've never heard anyone say it sounds ghetto. I mostly hear it being called unique, plus I never act ghetto but I am crazy and weird, Lol.
My parents are from Ecuador and named me Tamia because it means "rain" in the Ecuadorean Kichwa (Quechua) language, and rain is very important and sacred to the indigenous farming peoples of that land. (Pronounced TAM-ya.)
My name is also Tamia and I live in the Caribbean and my name has never been commented on as "ghetto". Also another point is that my mother told me that Tamia is Hebrew and it means palm tree.
Presumably can be pronounced both as Tuh-mee-uh & Tuh-my-uh.

Just discovered this name. It's really cool and pretty, and it would be a nice nickname for Tamara (or just a great given name itself). Names that start with Ta are extremely pretty.

I'm not sorry but like the person above said my name is Tamia and it doesn't sound ghetto. Maybe the ones who said it sounds ghetto are the ones with the messed up pronounced names. My name is pronounced Ta-me-a not Tam-I-a and even if it was said that way I love my name. It's better than not having one or being named that or kid. Plus in Italian yeah it says chipmunk but it also said ran flower and chipmunks are adorable and if you look at what your name means it tells you a bunch of characteristics like brave, determined, and a person who is smart and won't back down which I'm not doing. I hope those who hate this name will change their mind because it is a beautiful name.
Ok I'm sorry but I love my name Tamia it's a unique name and I don't know why the frick people think it's ghetto if you look up the real word of ghetto you would stop using the word to describe people (look up holocaust ghettos). So what if it means chipmunk you really should not care especially when it's in a different language but I do get when people pronounce it wrong it gets irritating. Tamia is a cool name so people should just get over it and stop making it a big deal!

Tamia, happens to be my name. I don't like my name. In my opinion it sounds like a ghetto name, and rough. Another is that it is SERIOUSLY, never pronounced right.

This name is ugly. It also sounds weird knowing it's Italian for "chipmunk".
I didn't know Tamia was a real name, I just typed it in. I just discovered it, and I think it's so gorgeous. I pronounce it tə-MEE-ə. It's prettier and softer sounding than Tania. In Quechua, "tamya" means "rain", and it can also be spelt "Tamia". My favourite Quechua name is Tamiasisa, which means "rain flower", and I think Tamia would be a lovely nickname for it.

Tamia is a Grammy Award-nominated Canadian R&B singer. She is married to NBA Basketball player Grant Hill.
The name Tamia is a French girl's name, literally from the French word "Tamia" which means "Chipmunk". Male versions are Tamias or Tamius which are Latin for "Chipmunk".
