Feminine form of the Late Latin Dorotheus, from the Greek Δωροθεος (Dorotheos), which meant "gift of God" from Greek δωρον (doron) "gift" and θεος (theos) "god". Dorothea was the of two early saints, notably the 4th-century martyr Dorothea of Caesarea.
