Meaning & History
Means "catcher of lions", derived from the Persian noun شیر (sher) meaning "lion" (see Sher) combined with Persian گیر (gir), which is the present stem of the verb گرفتن (gereftan) or (giriftan) meaning "to take, to catch". It ultimately comes from Middle Persian griftan meaning "to take, to hold, to restrain".A notable bearer of this name was prince Shergil Dadiani of Mingrelia (13th century).
