Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek noun μεναίχμης (menaichmes) meaning "staunch soldier". It is a compound word, of which the first element is either the Greek verb μένω (meno) meaning "to stay, to remain" as well as "to last, to withstand" or the Greek noun μένος (menos) meaning "mind" as well as "spirit" and "power, strength, force". The second element consists of the Greek noun αἰχμή (aichme) meaning "point of a spear, head of an arrow" as well as "war, battle" (in a figurative sense).
