In dutch, Jaap is used as a diminutive for Jacob or Jacobus. There is also Joop but it's used as a short form for the name Johannes.

The name Jaap is not a diminutive, as it does not have the typical -je ending. The real Dutch diminutive would be Jaapje or Japie, the last of which is actually a rare Dutch name. [noted -ed]

This sounds ugly, and it makes me think of the racial slur that WWII veterans use to describe Japanese people.

Jaap is an interesting name. I've been looking at names related 'Jacob' or 'Jack' and this Dutch one I find nice. The pronunciation is fun too.
