Meaning & History

Old Norse form of Garðar. Garðarr Svavarsson (sometimes spelled Garðar) was a Swede who was the first Scandinavian to stay over winter in Iceland, in the 860s. He named it Garðarshólmur (Garðar's Island) after himself, and the country bore the name for a while.
