Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ἀριστόβουλος (aristoboulos) meaning "best in counsel", which consists of the Greek adjective ἄριστος (aristos) meaning "best" combined with the Greek noun βουλή (boule) meaning "counsel, advice" as well as "will, determination".

Also compare the Greek verbs βουλεύω (bouleuo) meaning "to take counsel, to deliberate" and βούλομαι (boulomai) meaning "to will, to wish, to prefer".
