Meaning & History
Derived from the Greek adjective ἀλεξίκακος (alexikakos) meaning "keeping off ill, averting evil", which consists of the Greek verb ἀλέξω (alexo) meaning "to defend" as well as "to help" combined with the Greek noun κάκη (kake) meaning "wickedness, vice". Also compare the Greek adjective κακός (kakos) meaning "bad".This was an epithet of several Greek deities, such as Apollo, Hermes and Zeus.
