Alejo Carpentier y Valmont was a Cuban novelist, essay writer, and musicologist who greatly influenced Latin American literature during its famous "boom" period.
Gilberto Alejandro Durán Diaz, known to all as Alejo Durán or "El Negro Grande" (the Big Negro) was a Colombian vallenato music traditional composer, singer and accordionist. He is notorious for lyrically "self-flagellating" himself in his songs.
