The matron-priestesses of Mother-Cardea watched Queen Felipa closely after the birth of little Prince Dionysius. Her milk wouldn't come in, and her strength just wouldn't return. Throughout the winter, the Queen barely had the energy to get out of her bedroom. However, the spring seemed to bring new life and energy to the Queen, and she found herself wandering the garden as her children played.
King Estienne was hoping that meant good news. Yet when asked, the matron-priestesses just sadly shook their heads. It seems that they had already informed Pippa that to have any more children would be a death sentence to her and quite likely any child she tried to carry. Ten was saddened greatly by this news, not for the lack of more children but for the loss of Pippa's health.
Pippa, for her part, tried to be cheerful and not worry about what was done. She worked hard to gain back her health, and was very nearly her old-self when autumn arrived. However, with the rains and cold came the usual harvest-time colds and coughs. Pippa caught one early on and held onto it all winter. When spring came, she once again started to gain back her strength... but every autumn would find it seeped away again.
And so the seasons passed. Ten and Pippa watched their children grow. Ten noted how Basi had a keen mind and how he would make an excellent commander on the field for his brother Dion. Pax and Dachy were content to be little dolls... except when it came to horses. Both of them could ride any animal they could find... bareback! Little Dion was much doted upon by everybody, but never seemed to develop a spoiled temperament from any of it. Pippa had her good days in the summer, and her bad days in the winter. And through it all, Ten watched over the Kingdom of Elsey. Life wasn't perfect, but everybody in the Kingdom felt that it was good.
When it came time for Dion's 4th birthing-day celebration, Pippa found that she had almost no energy and a very bad cough. Unable to attend, Pippa went to bed early. That whole winter, Pippa was weaker then normal, with no appetite or energy. At a loss over what to do, Ten finally asked the matron-priestesses of Mother-Cardea if they could check on the Queen. After a complete examination, the matron-priestesses were surprised to learn that Pippa was once again pregnant... and about 6 months from the looks of things!
Ten became frantic with worry. Hadn't Pippa taken her teas and medicine as she was supposed to? Unable to do anything but move forward, the matron-priestesses agreed to stay and help Pippa as much as they could. Ten wasn't quite sure what to do with himself, and decided to look into how Pippa had ended up pregnant again. After much digging, Ten started to see signs of a conspiracy. Unsure if this was true, or just something that he wanted to believe, he asked Wulf to look over what he had found so far. Wulf did one better and found the link that tied the sabotaged medicine to the jungle Kingdom of Uwit.
Between the two of them, Wulf and Ten were able to stop another sabotage attack... this time on the water supply. Pleased with the results, Ten headed to Pippa's room to tell her about the activity only to have a page run into him... quite literally. Queen Felipa had gone into labor with approximately two more months to go! Ten rushed to her side, only to be banished by the matron-priestesses who were trying their absolute best to stop the labor, or at least slow it. There was a little success, but the reality was the Queen was in and out of labor for the next 8 days. Finally, Ten was called back. The matron-priestess told him that they had done all they could, and now it was out of their hands. Labor, they told him, would not be stopped another hour.
That was before breaking-fast. By noon, a little princess entered the world. Pippa smiled as she held the little girl, and then closed her eyes and drifted off. As a matron-priestess was taking the little Princess from the dead Queen's arms, she noticed the Queen's belly move. There was another child, and the child would die if they didn't do something quick. At first, Ten would not allow them to cut open the Queen's belly... after all, it might kill her! However, Royal Father Wulf stepped in and pulled Ten aside, nodding to the matron-priestesses to do what they needed to do.
One quick slice, and the Queen's belly slid open. The matron-priestesses pulled the flap aside and saw not one, but two little babies squirming and struggling. They were both holding on to each other and both came out at once. Wulf's face went gray as he watched the two come out together. Another possible succession war... just what they had tried to avoid in the first place! And there was still the threat of Uwit! They could not be forgotten nor forgiven. They had killed the Queen! Elsey would avenge her Queen...
