My late grandfather's name was Heinrich Cornelius, but on his passport from Russia, he's listed as Gregory Korneevitch. I've studied Russian, so I know that Heinrich cannot easily be spelled in the Russian alphabet, but does anyone know if there's a connection between Gregory and Henry? Or why he may have had to use that name?

Henry (or Heinrich, for that matter) can be spelled as Genrih in Russian. Maybe Genrih resembled Gregory?

Thanks for your response! I wonder if that's what caused the confusion, because it's clearly spelled Grigorii, and even Gregoire on the French side. I don't think my opa spoke Russian very well, so it's possible there were some misunderstandings. Thanks again.
