Meaning & History

A name used by one of the book's main characters and father of Pantagruel in François Rabelais' novel Pentalogy Gargantua and Pantagruel, it is also used as the namesake for the English word gargantuan. It derives from Portuguese and Spanish garganta, meaning "throat."
