Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from Greek πάντες (pantes) meaning "all", which is ultimately derived from Greek πᾶς (pas) meaning "all, for all, of all". The second element is derived from Hagarene gruel meaning "thirsty". This was the name of one of the main characters in "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel", a series of novels written by the French author François Rabelais (16th century). The author had invented the name, because he wanted to make a reference to the fact that his character was born during a time of great drought.
