Meaning & History

The name comes from the account of King Artus: a Hebrew Authurian Romance of 1279. The English version, published by Syracuse University Press in 2003, and was edited and translated by Curt Leviant.

Lady Izerna was the beautiful wife of Duke of Til Tomeil from the Kingdom of Logris, who was eventually married to King Uther Pendragon and conceived his child, Artusin, who became King Artus. King Uther Pendragon, plotted to have her for himself after seeing her at a tournament, and had the assistance of the wizard Merlin, in exchange for the child to be raised up in the art (of magic). King Uther Pendragon's plot also sealed the demise of her lawful husband, the Duke of Til Tomeil, who was killed on the very same night that King Uther Pendragon, disguised as the duke, and Merlin, disguised as the duke's companion, gained entrance into the castle where the duchess was staying in order to do with her according to his heart's desire.

The writer of article that I used, commented that this story sounds oddly similar to the story of King David, Bathsheba, and her husband Uriah, who was slain in battle due to the king's plot which was recorded in the Book of 2 Samuel of the Bible: 2 Samuel 11:1-2 - Samuel 12:23. However, the sort of sickness that King Uther Pendragon was experiencing due to his burning desire for the duchess, echoes that of the son of King David, Amnon, towards his half-sister Tamar, which is also recorded in the Book of 2 Samuel of the Bible: 2 Samuel 13:1-23.

Izerna is the name of one of the priestesses from Berwick Saga: Lazberia Chronicle 174.
