Meaning & History
Latinized form of Dietwara (possibly via its variant Thiwara), which is a younger and strictly feminine form of the unisex name Theodoar. Also compare Divera, which is very closely related. The best known bearer of this name is Divara van Haarlem (1511-1535), a Dutch Anabaptist who was Queen of the Anabaptist regime in the German city of Münster from 1534 until her death by execution. During her short life, she was also known as Dieuwertje Brouwersdochter (usually abbreviated to Brouwersdr. and literally means "brewer's daughter").In theatre, the name appears in the German-language opera Divara - Wasser und Blut (1993), which was based on the life of the aforementioned Divara van Haarlem.
