Meaning & History

Derived from Old English os "god" and either friþ "peace" or ferhð "soul, spirit, mind, life"

Osferth was described as a "kinsman" of Alfred the Great (848-899) and a member of his court. Surviving records point either to him being a maternal relative (related to Queen Osburh / Osburga) or the king's illegitimate son. In the TV show "The Last Kingdom" (2015-2022), Osferth is depicted as the king's illegitimate son.
