Meaning & History
Derivative of Bernardus, though there are also cases where the name is a direct latinization of Bernardin and Bernardino. For example, the medieval Italian saint Bernardino of Siena (1380-1444) is known as Bernardinus Senensis in Latin texts of the era, and it is due to this that he is known as saint Bernardinus of Siena in (at least) Belgium and the Netherlands.
