Meaning & History

From the characters 寤 (wù, meaning “to wake” or alternatively “difficult”) and 生 (shēng, meaning “born”). This was the personal name of Duke Zhuang of Zheng (郑庄公), the third ruler of the state of Zheng during the Chinese Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 473 BCE). According to historical records, he was named because of the difficult manner of his birth (interpreted either as birth in his mother’s sleep or a breech birth).
