Meaning & History
Combination of 獅子 (shishi) meaning "lion" and the suffix 丸 (maru) meaning "circle, round," used before the Meiji Period (1868-1912) as a suffix denoting affection (along with -maro (麿/麻呂)) and was given to boys of upper class until they came of age, usually at ages 13 to 17.Fictional characters include the ninja dog Shishimaru (獅子丸) in the manga series 'Ninja Hattori-kun' and the main character Shishimaru Dan (弾 獅子丸) in the tokusatsu television series 'Fuun Lion-Maru'.Despite the suffix's history of usage, this name is only recently used and it is a very rare name at that.
