Meaning & History

From Evalach, likely a corruption of Afallach. It appears in this form in Thomas Malory's 15th-century compilation of Arthurian legends 'Le Morte d'Arthur', in which Evelake is a good king of Sarras and a contemporary of Joseph of Arimathea. He is the first to possess the shield destined for Sir Galahad. The character's name was spelled Evalach or Evalac in the medieval French 'Estoire del Saint Graal' ('History of the Holy Grail'), written ca. 1220-35.
