The first element of this name is derived from Sahson, the indigenous name of a continental Germanic people called the Saxons, who in turn derived their name from Old Saxon sahs meaning "knife, dagger, sword". The second element of this name is derived from Old Saxon nōd meaning "help, need", which thus gives this name the meaning of "help(er) of the Saxons".

Sahsnot was the name of the national god of the Saxons, who in sources is often equated with the Germanic god Tiwaz (see TYR). He was also venerated by the Anglo-Saxons and the Frisians, who knew him as SEAXNĒAT and SAXNOT respectively.
