Meaning & History
Derived from the Persian noun سمندر (samandar) meaning "salamander", which is ultimately of Greek origin. This was also the name of a medieval city that was located near the Caspian Sea in what is now Dagestan. The meaning of its name is uncertain, but scholars have suggested that it might mean "farthest gate" in Middle Persian or that the city was named after the Zabender, a Hunnic tribe.
